1. Lighten Your Grip
Try lightening up your grip, this will really help you because when the grip is too tight, it prevents proper impact. If you lighten it up, you will feel the club release and that will help prevent the shank.
Also, holding the club really tight won’t let you swing freely and smoothly because your wrist will always be tense which will prevent you from turning and releasing the club head. There’s a saying:
“Hold the club tight enough that someone can’t pull the club out of your hand but loose enough that if there was an egg in between your hands it wouldn’t break” ~ Some Golfer
2. Stop Coming Steep
if you have the shanks you are most likely coming over the ball or “covering it” which is causing it to hit the Honzel. So the key to avoiding it is to try swinging out and through to your target. Put a tee in the ground about 2 inches past your ball and try hitting the tea.
This will help you improve your impact and will also help you stop shanking the ball. Another fun drill is putting a tee in the ground just outside the toe of your club at setup. Try and miss the tee at impact, and you’ll hit the ball in the center of the club face.
3. Athletic Position
Sometimes not having an athletic position at set up can cause you to have a terrible impact with the ball. Bend your knees, get lower and closer to the ball, hands forward and just swing through the ball!
Don’t stress it, just swing through with an athletic position and you’ll stop shanking the ball. So fixing your stance, your posture and getting in an athletic position is key to flushing the ball.
4. Tempo
Watch your tempo, sometimes it’s very easy to start swinging fast and have your tempo be all over the place. So slow down your swing and keep a beat in your head that you can swing to. The tempo in the golf swing is the most underrated piece of advice ever, it is so important. I cannot stress how IMPORTANT TEMPO IS!
There have been so many times where I have been having bad holes during a round, I started to focus on my tempo and I kid you not, I went birdie birdie par birdie. Now just focus on getting your tempo right and swinging to a constant beat in your head.
5. Fix Your Mindset
Just because you shank your first 3 shots on the range doesn’t mean you have the shanks! Also please realize that the shanks are 50% of the mental game. Just back off if you ever have a thought like “Don’t shank it” or “You’re gonna shank it”.
Listen to me… you have hit great shots before and you have also recovered from the shanks so you know how to do it. If you hit a shank, laugh it off. Move on mentally and focus on hitting the next one better!! You Can Do It!!!!
