5 Quick Ways To Improve Bunker Play

1. Stance

Your stance in the bunker can affect your bunker shot immensely. One trick that really helps you get your ball out of the bunker is to stand a bit open so that you can cut across and swing steep.

Doing this will help your ball come out softer and higher. Keeping your clubface open during the swing will help the ball to get out soft. Just remember to swing on the line of your feet.

2. Keep Your Head Down

Keeping your head down is a very important part of your swing during your bunker shot. If you keep your head down during the bunker shot then you will allow yourself to swing freely through the ball and commit to the shot.

It is very easy to get anxious and lift your head up. But you should ask yourself this question: Would you rather look at a bad shot or not look at the beginning of a good shot? This trick will help you hit the ball closer to the hole.

3. Pick A Spot Behind The Ball

Focusing on a spot behind the ball makes it easier for you to get the right contact with the bunker shot. I would look 2 inches behind the ball so that it would be easier for you to get the ball up high and soft.

Focusing on that spot will help you zone in on the bunker shot and commit to your swing.

4. Balance

When you set up for your shot in the bunker, make sure that you dig your feet inside the sand and you get the proper balance. When you set up you should make sure that your feet are spread apart and you have a wide base.

During your swing, do not move your lower body, keep it still and only move your upper body throughout the shot. This will help you stay balanced and not catch the bunker shot clean.

5. Stay Positive/Trust

You can have the right technique, the right loft, the perfect swing, but if you don’t have confidence and trust towards your shot. Then none of that even matters. The key is to stay positive throughout the swing. Make sure that you keep your head down and just let the club do the job. I mean… what’s the worst that’s gonna happen? You skull it? So what! It’s not the end of the world, just give it your best and tell yourself:

“You can do this”

“Just trust yourself”

“This is in the hole”

Telling yourself positive statements like these will help you a lot with your shots. Developing trust and commitment in your golf game will help you shoot lower scores and hit the golf shots you’ve always wanted to hit.
